Discovering SLO County Agriculture Brochure
The latest addition to the foundation’s cache of projects, the “Discovering San Luis Obispo County Agriculture” brochure serves as a free reference guide to show both visitors and our local nonagricultural community that agriculture is an essential component of the county’s economy and the local tourism industry.
This full-color foldout brochure includes a top 20 commodity listing, county agricultural land use map, plus a host of countywide ag-related contact information.
These days, so few informational avenues offer clear insight into our local farming and ranching community. Without the proper communication to the public, the importance of agriculture is lost.
The truth about SLO County agriculture is that it provides the food, fiber and flowers for a worldwide market – recently estimated at nearly $1.5 billion in total annual economic vitality for the county. The foundation’s brochure will assist in spreading the word about our county agriculture’s vital role in the community.
Agriculture doesn’t begin at the corner supermarket. With the right informational tools, such as the “Discovering San Luis Obispo County Agriculture” brochure, we can help bridge the gap to better public awareness and understanding.
Native Tree Guidelines Brochure
The Native Tree Management Guidelines for San Luis Obispo County brochure helps to provide assistance to urban and rural landowners in managing native trees on private property. It is primarily and foremost a voluntary plan for the private landowner to enhance, protect and properly utilize the native trees in the unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County.
The brochure’s guidelines were specifically designed and intended to:
• Maintain healthy native trees without unduly burdening the landowner;
• Reforest native tree species through reasonable means, where appropriate;
• Plan for replacement of trees;
• Retain hollow or dead trees, which do not pose a fire or safety hazard to provide habitat, where reasonably possible;
• Remove trees which present a fire or safety hazard.
The brochure also provides a handy list of additional reference materials and contacts.
SLO County Landowner Resource Guide
This helpful full-color guide, recently developed by the Foundation, offers a comprehensive list of agencies and organizations landowners should be aware of, when planning to live and/or build on rural land in San Luis Obispo County. No new landowner should be without this one!
Contact listing categories include “When Purchasing Rural Land,” “When Proposing Various Activities on Rural Land,” “When Proposing Grading or Other Earthwork on Rural Land,” and “Government Assistance Programs.” Information includes names and descriptions, plus address, phone and Website information.
SLO County Noxious Weed Identification Guide
This fully illustrated guide to weed identification is available to all landowning residents of San Luis Obispo County. Titled “Noxious Weeds of San Luis Obispo county” offers information that no landowner should do without.
This handy, full-color, foldout brochure offers photos and descriptions detailing the county’s most notorious plant pests.
The truth is, there are weeds much more devastating than the simple nuisance plants we all encounter around our homes. The weeds described in this brochure, known as “noxious” or “invasive,” are some of the worst weed invaders found in San Luis Obispo County, and they can cause serious problems for local agriculture and the environment.
Particular weeds highlighted include: artichoke thistle, hoary cress, purple starthistle, wooly distaff thistle, French broom, arundo, pampassgrass and jubatagrass, cape ivy, spiny cocklebur and puncture vine, as well as the widespread yellow star thistle. Other invasive weeds found within the county are included, as well as prevention tips, information on control methods, and contact information for assistance.
