A Private Applicator Certificate (PAC) exam session will be offered by the San Luis Obispo County Agricultural Commissioner at the Farm Bureau.  This is an opportunity to become certified as a private applicator or to have your employees certified.  The private applicator certificate is required for a grower who uses or supervises the use of a restricted use pesticide on property they own, lease or rent, or for a grower's employee who is assigned the duty to use or supervise the use of restricted use pesticides.  Trainers of agricultural field workers, who enter treated fields, and pesticide handlers are required to be qualified trainers.  Obtaining a PAC is one method for a grower or a grower's employee to become a qualified trainer.

Information on the PAC and a list of restricted use pesticides can be obtained by calling the San Luis Obispo County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office at (805) 781-1555, or by visiting the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.

The exam is made up of multiple choice questions and is offered in English and Spanish. It will take approximately two hours. Persons taking the exam should be familiar with pesticide laws and regulations and with how to interpret a pesticide label. A score of 70% is required to pass.

We highly recommend you study for the exam. Study materials are offered in English and Spanish. The study material, Pesticide Safety: A Reference Manual for Private Applicators, Second Edition (Publication 3383 - English; Publication 3394 - Spanish) is available for $7 at the University Cooperative Extension at 2156 Sierra Way, Suite B in San Luis Obispo (805) 781-5940.

Employees must bring their employer's name or business name and the employer's work phone number. The exams will be collected and graded at a later date. Those who pass the exam will be contacted by phone or mail and arrangements made to issue the Private Applicator Certificate.
